What to see and do in Fontainebleau
The château was home to French rulers for more than seven centuries, from François I to Napoleon III. It was in its Cour du Cheval-Blanc that Napoleon bade farewell to his Imperial Guard in 1814. Its apartments, the François I gallery and the gardens are open all year — and far less crowded than Versailles.
The forest of Fontainebleau is known worldwide among climbers for its sandstone boulders; it is widely regarded as the birthplace of bouldering. Walkers and cyclists have hundreds of kilometres of marked trails. Nearby Barbizon, home of the painting school of the same name, is worth the short detour.
Getting around from Fontainebleau
Fontainebleau-Avon station, on Transilien line R, reaches Paris Gare de Lyon in about forty minutes. Note that the station is in Avon, several kilometres from the château and the town centre, so you still need transport at that end.
