What to see and do in Melun

Getting around from Melun
Melun station is served by RER line D and Transilien line R towards Paris Gare de Lyon. For flights, Orly is the natural choice; Charles de Gaulle lies on the far side of the Paris region and takes considerably longer.
Vaux-le-Vicomte is a genuine transport problem: no regular bus line serves the château, and the seasonal shuttle does not cover every opening time, least of all the candlelit evenings. A private car remains the simplest answer.
Practical advice
For a flight from Orly, leaving Melun about two and three quarter hours before departure is usually sufficient. The A6 motorway is congested at peak times, so we often take the N104 instead.
For an evening at Vaux-le-Vicomte, book the return journey at the same time as the outward one: taxis are scarce in the area once the château closes.
